Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and their defending NBA champion teammates have been full of pleasant surprises for their fans this season.
Wade had another surprise for young Chicago students when he visited the “By The Hand Club” on Oak Street.
Wade had donated 20 iPads and $75,000 for an iPad Reading Lab in the Cabrini-Green By The Hand Club center, 1000 N Sedgwick Ave. The lab is used exclusively for kids who are struggling with reading. The club was founded by Donnita Travis.
Wade was chatting with the kids on their iPads on Tuesday and then surprised them when he actually walked into the lab and greeted them in person. The lab has been decorated with new furniture and a life-sized image of Wade painted on one wall.
Wade, who grew up in Robbins and on the South Side of Chicago, told the students: “You made my day,” after sitting at a small table and answering questions about the NBA and the importance of reading.
Our students have the power to impact Chicago’s greatest needs. You have the power to show these young men and women abundant life—mind, body and soul.
