When Dame’nique started at By The Hand, she remembers, “I was so shy and didn’t really talk to anyone.”
One person that helped her overcome was Ms. Yasenia. “She made me feel welcomed. She’s so nice, funny and generous. She makes me feel safe.” Dame’nique continues, “I went to camp with her in third grade and came back with so much joy and love. She taught me about faith and the word of God.” Dame’nique adds, “But she is strict about God. Because she wants us to know Him. She wants us to really know God gave His Son because He loves us.” Dame’nique is proud that she’s making more friends and interacting more with the other students. She reveals, “I didn’t use to smile that much, but now I have a smile on my face.” This flourishing sixth grader is now a Student Ambassador who loves learning to be an advocate and storyteller and getting the chance to tell people about By The Hand.
Our students have the power to impact Chicago’s greatest needs. You have the power to show these young men and women abundant life—mind, body and soul.
