Power of One Tutor

  • Academic Coach
Volunteer academic coaches work with students to complete their homework assignments, school projects, or focus on specific academic skills. Academic assistance may occur in the classroom with the Team Leader, or volunteers may work with students, one-on-one, in designated homework labs, under the supervision of site staff. Academic needs vary on the grade, needs, and capabilities of each individual student.
  • Literacy Trainer
Volunteer literacy trainers support our literacy efforts, either as classroom assistants during our Lexia reading rotation, or through a specialized training program designed to practice hands-on early literacy skills. Volunteers must receive specific training to consider the second opportunity as a literacy trainer.
  • Subject Matter Expert
Volunteer subject matter experts provide specialized tutoring or learning opportunities for students interested in a particular subject. Volunteers may provide advanced training for students curious to move ahead, or provide targeted instruction for those struggling to catch up to their grade level.

Power of One Instructor

  • K-8 Enrichment Teacher
Volunteer K-8 enrichment teachers offer special enrichment opportunities for students to learn and apply real-world skills. Utilize your unique talents, skills and abilities to lead students in our K-8 program through an enrichment cycle. Enrichment programs occur throughout the academic year, including the summer. They often run for 6-8 weeks, depending on the additional activities of the club.
  • High School Enrichment Teacher
Volunteer high school enrichment teachers offer special enrichment opportunities for students to learn and apply real-world skills. Utilize your unique talents, skills and abilities to lead students in our high school program through an enrichment cycle. We also have a Media Lab, which is an opportunity for enrichments in the creative arts, production and performance. Enrichment programs occur throughout the academic year, including the summer. Our high school program determines the length of the enrichment, depending on the time of the year.

Power of One Mentor

  • NXT Steps Program Mentor
Volunteer NXT steps program mentors pair with a high school senior, and walk with the student through the transition from high school to college or career. Mentors and mentees meet together monthly over a meal and activity. Mentors meet one additional time to coach and support students through college access, their graduation checklist and other challenging areas in the transition to adulthood.

Power of One Leader

  • Small Group Leader
Volunteer small group leaders join a group of By The Hand students for their spiritual growth and development. We empower volunteer small group leaders to walk with students through specific topics and discussions after they work alongside our spiritual development team.

Power of One Partner

  • Long-Term Program Partner
Volunteer long-term program partners are organizations that choose to walk alongside a grade of students over a span of multiple years. Our partners use this opportunity to share their abilities in targeted areas of need, such as high school entrance or anti-bullying, while they also demonstrate their availability by building lasting relationships with our students. We work with all long-term program partners to determine the right opportunity for the greatest influence.
  • Staff & Student Care Package Creator
Volunteer care package creators partner with By The Hand to provide beneficial classroom materials through a Classroom Starter Kit, or encourage and motivate a grade of students through our Autumn and Spring Care Packages. Individuals or groups may purchase and compile items based on a curated list, and use the opportunity to gather together and serve, whether at a By The Hand location or offsite.
  • Field Trip Host
Field trip host partners provide unique, engaging and creative field trip opportunities for By The Hand students. Field trip hosts may also participate in other volunteer activities, culminating in a field trip to their site. Field trip hosts may also partner with By The Hand to support and enhance educational field trip opportunities for By The Hand students throughout the year, and especially in the summer.
